6 Year Old Girl Critically Injured in Sunday Boating Accident

A 6-year-old girl remains hospitalized and in critical condition Monday after a weekend boating accident on the Natalbany River in Tangipahoa Parish.
A 22-foot ski boat with five passengers aboard was towing a tube with two juveniles riding on it about 4:45 p.m. Sunday when the boat crashed into a tree along the bank, state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesman Adam Einck said Monday.
The crash occurred about 3 miles upstream from where the river merges with the Tickfaw River.
The girl was in the boat at the time of the crash and suffered major head trauma requiring immediate attention, Einck said in a news release.
Wildlife and Fisheries agents called for a helicopter, which took the girl to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
The operator of the boat suffered a broken foot, and the other five passengers were treated for minor injuries, Einck said.
Wildlife and Fisheries’ Enforcement Division, the lead investigative agency for the incident, took a blood sample to determine if the boat’s operator was impaired. Lab results take up to four weeks, Einck said.
