Brothers Killed in Broussard La. Crash

Police late Sunday released the identities of two brothers killed over the weekend in a fiery vehicle crash over the weekend in a U.S. 90 construction zone in Broussard.

Broussard Police Chief Brannon Decou said Sandeep Patel, 38, of Abbeville, and his brother Satyen Patel, 32, of India, were killed in the fire that consumed a 2011 Toyota Camry and drove back officers who attempted a rescue.

Sandeep Patel, the driver, showed no sign of life when officers arrived. His brother was alive, but his legs were pinned.

“Officers attempted to extinguish the fire with extinguishers before the fire department arrived but they were unable to even after using five fire extinguishers,” Decou said.

Decou said the accident began as a two-vehicle wreck at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, with the Toyota traveling fast on U.S. 90 and rear-ending a 2007 Ford F150 driven by Max Romero, of New Iberia near La. 92.

Romero told police he tried to follow the Toyota, but lost it.

Decou said officers responding to a report of a hit and run located the Toyota wrecked and smoking in a construction zone near Le Triomphe, a gated community off U.S. 90. Officers were trying to remove Satyen Patel when the flames erupted.

Officers later identified Romero as the second driver of the hit and run that was called in by a witness. Romero told police he didn’t seen the Toyota crash, and that the damage to his Ford was not enough to call police, Decou said.

A few simple rules to avoid inconvenient and tragic consequenses:

1. Immediately report to law enforcement any accident ressulting in any damge or injuries.  Romero may be cited for failure to report an accident in this case.

2. Never chase another vehicle even in a hit and run situation.  Report the accident and do your best to recall the make, model and color of the hit and run vehicle and a physical descritption of the driver.  get the license plate number if possible.  Make ommediate note of any of these observations.

3.  Never flee the scene of an accident.  The consequence, as here, may be far worse than that you are fleeing.

4.  Never assume that you do not have a right to legal recovery because you are in a singel car accident. In many cases, you may still recover for the injuries resulting from a single car accident.
