July 29, 2013 At Least 5 Killed In Burbank California Accident At least five people were killed after a car crashed into a pillar and burst into flames in the early hours of Saturday morning in Burbank, Calif., police said. Burbank County Police and Fire Department responded to a call of a vehicle fire at 4:13 a.m. and found a compact car fully engulfed in flames on the southbound I-5 Freeway, Burbank Police Sergeant Darin Ryburn said. "The car struck a concrete pillar right under the underpass," he said. "It appears that speed was a factor in the accident." The Nissan was found where San Fernando Boulevard meets Scott Road at the I-5 undercrossing. The call was upgraded to a rescue when authorities learned there were passengers still inside the vehicle, the Burbank Fire Department said. "Upon putting out the fire, at least 5 fatalities were discovered trapped in the vehicle," said Captain Peter Hendrickson, a spokesman for the Burbank Fire Department. Police said they found an injured 18-year-old woman next to the burning vehicle who was transported to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. Her condition was unknown. Ryburn said authorities could not confirm the age, sex, or identification of the victims on Saturday morning. "We don't know due to the condition of the vehicle," he said.
