Louisiana resident, Chaz Brumfield, was hit by a Toyota pickup or SUV while riding a scooter on a state highway.  The Toyota fled the scene leaving Brumfield for dead.  Authorities are currently searching for a the Toyota involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash Sunday night in Tangipahoa Parish, State Police said.

The four-vehicle crash occurred on La. 445 about a mile north of Interstate 12. Chaz Brumfield, 33, of Robert, was driving a Honda moped at about 8:30 p.m. south on the highway "at a slow rate of speed” without headlights and tail lights when a vehicle struck the scooter from behind, State Trooper Nick Manale said.

Brumfield, who was not wearing a helmet, fell off the moped and was hit by both a 2011 International 18-wheeler and a 2007 Toyota Camry traveling north, Manale said.

Brumfield was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Brumfield’s toxicology test results are pending, Manale said.

Troopers suspect the hit-and-run vehicle is a Toyota pickup or SUV that could have damage to its left, front fender and headlight, Manale said.

The drivers of the 18-wheeler, Antoine Jones, 39, Bolingbrook, Ill., and of the Toyota Camry, Karen Rocker, 54, Robert, were both wearing seat belts and were not injured. Both drivers submitted to breath alcohol tests and showed no signs of alcohol, Manale said.

Anyone with information about the hit and run is asked to call the State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250.
