September 28, 2013 Opelousas Man Indicted in Motorcycle Accident Death An Opelousas man who ran out of gas and left his Mitsubishi pickup Oct. 10 on the side of Kennerson Road was arrested this week in the death of a motorcyclist who rode into the truck, St. Landry sheriff’s officials said. The truck had no lights on warning others that it obstructed the roadway, officials said. Marcus Amos, 45, is being held without bond on one count each of negligent homicide, failure to report an accident, driving under suspension, no insurance, expired vehicle registration and criminal mischief for allegedly filling out a false report, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Cory Shawn Perry was riding his 2008 Yamaha west when it struck Amos’ truck, which had been left in the travel lane, Capt. Megan Vizena said in an email. She said said Perry hit the rear of the truck and died at the scene. "Minutes after the crash occurred, Amos fled the scene on foot, leaving Perry’s body in the roadway,” Vizena said. Amos was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on Monday. Sometimes it is not what you do but what you fail to do that is the problem. Failing to activate his emergency flashers, failing to move his vehicle off of the travel lane, failing to accurately and promptly report a serious accident and failing to render aid to the victim all contribute to this case being a crime rather than a tragedy. And it can not be overlooked that Amos, like 40% of Louisiana drivers, was not insured. Certainly he will pay a price for his omissions. But what of the Perry family? Their loss is beyond measure and the circumstance made worse by not Amos not having insurance ot cover some of the expenses arising from this horrific event. This accident illustrates that purchasing uninsured motorist (UM) coverage is an absolute necessity in Louisiana. And don't be coached into selecting UM property or UM economic loss only coverage. Be sure to ask for UM bodily injury in an amount equal to your liability coverage. Why insure others for more than you insure yourself?
