Winter Storm Brings Travel Risk to Deep South

People across the Northeast faced a treacherous commute Wednesday morning after a winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the region and left temperatures hovering near zero.

From Boston to Kentucky, the storm had canceled thousands of flights, closed many schools and slowed traffic on many key roads to a crawl. The snow had largely stopped by Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The severe winter storm conditions are sweeping into the deep south as well with cities like Jackson MS, Baton Rouge LA and Austin TX facing 2 days of lows below freezing.  These temperatures bring travel risks that many in the South rarely encounter.  Federal Government statistics tell us that your risk of being involved in  car accident, truck accident, or other highway accident increases by more thatn 30% in foul weather.

Black ice can develop on road surfaces and bridges when temperatures approach 32F.  The icy conditions are not visible so pose a surprise risk for drivers.  A safe practice is to reduce your speed when temperatures reach the mid 30's and be particularly vigilant when approaching and crossing bridges.

Rain during low atmospheric temperatures creates slick and hazardous road conditions.  Again, the risk is greatest on or near bridges where surface water turns to ice before the ambient temperature reaches the freezing mark.  Avoid driving in rain and near freezing weather if possible.  If you must drive, maintain a heightened level of attention and caution.

Freezing weather also calls for homeowners to protect their property and pet owners to protect their pets.  Wrap exposed pipes and plumbing fixtures to prevent pipe freeze.  Leaving a light drip on interior faucets will also help avoid this risk.  Keep pets inside during extreme temperatures and remember that not every pet is equally able to tolerate cold.  An large, heavy coated dog is much more tolerant of cold then a small hairless cat.
