Slidell Man Killed In Motorcycle Crash

A 27-year-old man died Wednesday night after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a vehicle that failed to yield while turning onto U.S. 190, east of Interstate 10 in St. Tammany Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Kiel T. Rasmussen, of Slidell, died after being thrown from his 2011 Honda motorcycle while trying to avoid a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon turning left from Brookter Road onto Fremeaux Avenue at 7 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police Troop A spokesman Jared Sandifer.

Rasmussen, who was wearing a helmet, was traveling eastbound on Fremeaux at a high rate of speed when the driver of the Tiburon, 26-year-old Juan C. Martinez, also of Slidell, failed to yield at a stop sign and pulled in front of Rasmussen’s motorcycle, State Police said.

Martinez was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on counts of failure to yield at a stop sign resulting in a death and driving without a license, State Police said.

Troopers do not suspect that impairment of either driver led to the crash. However, State Police did say the excessive speed of Rasmussen was a factor in the crash.
