Larry Jones, LSU Football Player, Interim AD, and Alumni Association Administrator Dies after extended illness

Larry Jones, a center and linebacker on the 1953 and '54 football teams and the Florida State head coach from 1971-73, died Thursday, according to a notice from the LSU Alumni Association. Jones (15-19) coached the Seminoles three years before Bobby Bowden.

Jones died at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, according to the notice. A cause of death was not mentioned.

He was named LSU Alumnus of the Year last month as a result of his efforts to raise more than $35 million in contributions for scholarships, professorships and faculties during his 23 years working with LSU's alumni association. Jones was unable to attend an April ceremony in his honor, but watched the event on FaceTime and delivered a pre-recorded acceptance message.
