Memorial Weekend Activities Around Baton Rouge

Plan to celebrate Memorial Day weekend in the Baton Rouge area with events from Ascension to Pointe Coupee.

 

ASCENSION PARISH

 

MONDAY, 11 a.m.: Veterans Memorial Park, 612 S. Irma Blvd., Gonzales. Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Dennis Beaver, a senior naval instructor at St. Amant High School, will be the guest speaker. The program is hosted by the Ascension Veterans Park Committee.

 

EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH

 

SATURDAY, 5 p.m.: BREC’s Memorial Day Celebration. Independence Community Park, 7500 Independence Blvd. Activities include softball, tennis, pickleball mixers, a golf clinic, horseshoes and shuffleboard. At 7 p.m. BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight, a veteran, will host a short ceremony that will include patriotic music and a presentation of the flags.

 

SATURDAY, 8 a.m.: The Boy Scouts of America will hold a flags ceremony at Port Hudson National Cemetery at 20978 Port Hickey Road, Zachary. The public is invited to help place flags at 16,000 grave sites. Volunteers are asked to bring a large screwdriver to make a hole for the flags.

 

5 P.M.: Bayou Country Superfest.  LSU Tiger Stadium  Two days of top country artist performances and fan appearances.

MONDAY, 11 a.m.: American Legion Post 502 will conduct the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Port Hudson National Cemetery at 20978 Port Hickey Road.

 

MONDAY, 11 a.m.: Memorial Day Service in the Louisiana Memorial Plaza near the USS Kidd Veterans Memorial & Museum. The Baton Rouge Music Club Chorus will perform a musical tribute. Former U.S. Congressman Henson Moore will be the keynote speaker.

 

MONDAY, 2 p.m.: American Legion Post 38 will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Baton Rouge National Cemetery, 220 N. 19th St.

 

MONDAY, 7 p.m.: The Baton Rouge Concert Band will perform on the steps of the State Capitol, 900 N. Third St.

 

THURSDAY, noon: Memorial Day Ceremony at the LSU War Memorial on the Parade Ground honoring former LSU students and all veterans who have given their lives to their country. The event will feature a wreath-laying ceremony, a moment of silence and the playing of Taps. Maj. Gen. Glenn H. Curtis, adjutant general of the Louisiana National Guard, will speak at a luncheon following the ceremony.

 

POINTE COUPEE PARISH

 

SUNDAY, 2 p.m.: The Kiwanis of Pointe Coupee host the Blessing of the Boats under the pavilion on Morrison Parkway in New Roads. The event will feature a brief ceremony honoring those who have served in the armed forces.
