Hammond, LA – 1 Teen Dead and 2 Others Injured in Rollover at I-55 and US-51

Hammond, LA (June 17, 2019) – On Sunday, June 16th, Louisiana State Police began investigating a crash that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy and the serious injury of two other teenage victims. The incident was reported late that evening at around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of I-55 and US-51 in Hammond.

The wreck involved a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Viola Oliver II who was traveling southbound on I-55. As she was attempting to exit the highway, Oliver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over at least 5 times, according to officials.

Three unrestrained teenage occupants were ejected in the crash. A seriously injured 15-year-old was taken to North Oaks Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The other two victims were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital of Baton Rouge where they remain in critical condition.

Oliver was also in critical condition and was taken to North Oaks Hospital.

Intoxication is believed to be a factor, and the crash is still under investigation.
